Understanding Herbal Medications

Loading...

Herbal medicine is perhaps the oldest form of medicine. Ever since man discovered that herbs can treat unhealthy conditions, it has been used to cure every kind of condition. Almost every traditional medicine, including Ayurveda, Unani, and Chinese medicine uses herbal formulations as medicine. Even today a number of alternative healthcare sciences, like homeopathy, use herbs. Herbs were dried, grinned, juiced and even cooked to get the best results.

Modern science has further validated what we have known for centuries — that some herbs are packed with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial properties along with a host of nutrients that help us fight infections and lead a healthy life. Fortunately, herbal syrup manufacturers have also made them accessible and convenient so that you can just take them whenever you want.

Traditional herbal medicine

It is not just Ayurveda that used herbs to cure diseases and fight infections. In fact, the most popular form of traditional medicines, Chinese medicine, also relied extensively on herbs. Chinese herbalism, based on concepts of yin and yang, use the same analogy for herbs. Some herbs are seen as ‘cooling’ and some as ‘stimulating’. The first is yin and the second is yang. Both these qualities have to be balanced in a person.

Ayurveda uses herbs extensively in its formulations. There are more than 5,000 herbs used in Ayurvedic medicine. Herbs were seen as nature’s goodness. The same herb could be used to treat multiple conditions. Most formulations used multiple herbs. Ayurvedic texts are full of detailed benefits of these herbs. The ancient physicians would often grow these herbs or go out and collect these in making their medications.

Another popular traditional medicine, Unani medicine also relied extensively on herbs. Like other traditional forms of medicine, it also saw the human body as a balanced structure. Diseases occurred when this balance was disturbed. It also relied heavily on herbal formulations. Unani medicine uses a number of tonics to treat patients. Herbal syrup manufacturers make many of these tonics.

What is common in all these traditional medicines, apart from the use of herbs itself? Unlike the modern approach, traditional medicine did not treat just the disease. It envisions wellness as the overall state of a person and herbs were meant to keep this healthy balance. It may have treatment for diseases, but the focus of these time-honoured medical streams has been to manage the overall wellness of a human being, to heal from within and restore the natural balance that every person is born with.

Modern approach

Conventional medicine, especially allopathy, has moved far away from herbalism. But the strong influence of herbs has not gone from our life. Traditional medicine that used herbalism exists in every culture. We even ascribe some to ‘old wife’s tales’. Conventional wisdom and years of observation has told us that these simple measure work.

Modern herbalists have continued with these practices. Most of them use a mishmash of traditional medicine. Many of them are now studying herbs, understanding their structure and how they work. They have applied modern science and manufacturing to this to create even more refined products. Herbs are now processed in a highly efficient manner to create more concentrated products. Herbal syrup manufacturers, for instance are making tonics and medicines.
