What are temperature and humidity test chamber used for?
These test chambers are widely used in testing various types of materials for their tolerance to heat, cold, dry and humidity. They are also implied for quality inspection of multiple types of electronic products, electrical appliance and products from communication instruction, automobiles, plastic, metal, food, chemical, building materials, medical and aerospace industries.
How do these test chambers perform the tests?
Temperature and Humidity test chambers have different types of artificial environments which are set accordingly by the technician as which one he wants. After this is done the product is kept in this environment. The environment is than induced, controlled, monitored and evaluated till the desire result is obtained. These test chambers have vibration tables and apparatus regulating exposure to abrasives like sand and dust. These test chambers have varying size. Some test chambers are very small which are designed to check miniature components like circuit boards and controllers. Mid-sized chambers are used for larger objects or multiple loads of small products for mass testing. Occasionally, extremely large chambers are used for vehicles and machines that require this kind of testing.
The 85/85 test
They are most commonly used type of test controls in the test chamber. This test uses a temperature and humidity testing threshold that applies to the vast majority of environmental evaluations. It involves setting test chamber conditions to an internal temperature of 85 degrees Celsius and relative humidity index to 85 percent. This condition is held for a time up to 1000 hours so that the engineers can get the desired result from it. This test involves two types of expedited processes:-
Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT): This process implements aggressive temperature and humidity rate changes. They also use multi-axis shock vibrations that greatly reduce testing time while remaining accurate on artificially inducing real-time stressors.
Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS): This procedure quickly screens defective products and their parts prior to shipment. Tester’s use the HASS stress screening process for already designed and proven products which need a final quality control check before distribution.
Issues which are discovered by test chambers in a product
- Epoxy coating: The test chambers put the products in extreme stress, which reveal any weakness through expansion, contraction, moisture, ingress and surface corrosion or abrasion.
- Fogging: Products are put through hot and cold cycles of damp and dry which reveal any moisture fogging that may appear between the layers.
- Water tightness: Products are put through wet environments which reveal any water leakage or ingress weakness in the product.
Mechanical failure: Changes in temperature can take a toll on many products which often leads to minor or catastrophic mechanical failure.
